Art and artists have the ability to solve substantial problems.

  • “Design is not art. Design has to function.”
  • “Art is meant to provoke thought and emotions, but it doesn’t solve problems.”
  • “Artists primarily work off instinct, whereas designers employ a methodical, data-driven process.”

So many different layers can be discussed and argued over. Bottom line, anything this is designed well, with intent and aesthetics can be considered art, in my opinion. There should be no reason to pit art and design against one another when they are at their best when deployed complimentary to each other.

Art exists and has existed in every known human culture and consists of objects, performances, and experiences that are intentionally endowed by their makers with a high degree of aesthetic interest. By virtue of this definition, design is undeniably art. It can be found in every human culture. Designing art creates objects, performances, and experiences. And, designers intentionally instill significant amounts of aesthetic interest into their work.

So what is art? Many believe that art is anything that stirs emotion in you. These emotions depend entirely on your history, your story, basically everything that comes together to make up who you are. Because of this, three different people can experience the same piece of art and have wildly different reactions to it. One person might think it’s the most beautiful thing they’ve ever seen, the second person might hate it, and the third might not feel much of anything at all. And none of them would be wrong! So feeling an emotion that can be driven by an experirence from a painting or a graphic poster for example (yes, I know there are many other things that can be put into this suitcase i.e. music, dance, nfts, movies and even an iphone).

Regardless of your opinion, take a moment to look at the world around you, acknowledge the designs that make your life better, look at the art that flows all around the spaces you walk through and let it lift you.
